May 2025

Meeting / e-Vote 05/15/25

Background:
509J asks for equipment donations every so often, usually levels to about $6,000 - $7,000 per year depending on the equipment.
17J asks for fertilizer and grass seed every year, often coming to about $3,000 per year.
The prior field use agreement with the 509J expired June 30, 2024.

Luke’s ask for a vote:
We would ask for a 5-year use agreement with 509J, covering AYSOs usage on all 509J non-turf areas, through June 2029. This would cost us $33,497.84 to buy 509J new mower…

If agreed, 509J: “Per our field use agreement, we are invoicing AYSO for $33,497.84 for purchase of equipment intended to support field maintenance for Corvallis School District.  This purchase is to be made in lieu of donated seed and fertilizer that was agreed to for use of Corvallis School District fields.  Both parties agree that this purchase will fulfill AYSO’s obligations for all field use through June 30, 2029.  Any future agreements for use of fields or facilities will be negotiated between the parties and will not be indebted by this purchase.”

A fair chunk of money. The nice part about buying them field equipment, is that it directly helps us and if desired, we could ask to use it at the Adams area…

If agreed, 509J: “It is also agreed that Corvallis School District will be the undisputed owner of the equipment with no promises or guarantees of use for said equipment.  However, it is the district’s intent to allow Corvallis School District approved AYSO volunteers to have access to and use of equipment, upon availability, to maintain and improve district fields located at 1435 - 1615 SW 35th Street, Corvallis, OR. Said use will be negotiated within any future use agreements, based on the mutual benefit of said use.”

Mary: Who signs this 5 yr agreement?  Is there any doubt it could be overridden by a higher level at some point? I know we’ve had agreements with a certain department in the past. Has this 509J department seen it proposal for the 5 yrs and indicated that they at least probably would accept this agreement? - Luke and the AYSO office, we would ask for it to cover 5 years.

- Vote passed for this fields expense and to ask for a 5 year agreement - No no or abstention votes.

•    Coaching Female Players
•    One Team One Goal
•    Roundtable: How to utilize what you learned this week

Important Take Home Notes
•    Our region is leaps and bounds above other regions in the section and area
•    Many regions do not use game reports as a means to communicate with coaches and referees and have documentation on issues that arise throughout the season
•    Many regions were interested in the coach’s manual put together for 3rd/4th grade players. We should highly focus on rolling this out in the Fall
•    We need to come up with a unified format for our coach instructors for field sessions like the coach’s manual for each age division. Include important information as follows:
o    How to conduct parent/player meeting. Set expectations and boundaries for the season. May need to give extra support to our women coaches
o    What to do game day: meet with other coaches and ref before the game. Make adjustments throughout the game. Winning coach needs to make an effort first to balance the game
o    FILL OUT GAME REPORTS!!! Make this very important during field session training and the importance of game reports
o    How to talk/interact with referees during the game. Coaches set the example. Coaches are in charge of their parents as well
•    Nationwide, women make up 28% of coaching staff. What are our numbers for the region? Data to collect:
o    How many women coaches do we have in each division
o    How many women are head coaches
o    How many women coach in older divisions
o    How many women are coaching boys in different age divisions

Individual Courses/Trainings

EPIC Volunteer Training 1.5hr- Certification
Presenters    Cecila Romero-Chavez
Regional EPIC Program Coordinator

        Helen B. Johnson
VIP Administrator
Region 873 Treasurer
VIP Bowling
VIP Supports Inc

•    EPIC=Everyone Plays in our Communities
•    VIP= Very Important Player
•    This is a volunteer training certification course. You must complete the EPIC Coodinator and EPIC Coach training courses before you can start a program.
•    Program includes: EPIC RC, EPIC CVPA, scheduler, refs, coaches, and buddies
•    Idea of the program is to create an EPIC team (ages and soccer abilities will be flexible) to play against core teams. Games will be structured different than other core games. Play short time-periods with breaks, relax on the rules, buddies will be on the field with players
•    Buddies CAN NOT be parents. EPIC teams are created to let parents enjoy the games like other parents. Buddies CAN be older siblings, high school players, college students, other volunteers
•    EPIC players are like all players
•    Score jersey company will give you 50% off jerseys for EPIC players
•    Email Helen for opportunities in grant funding available

AYSO Play! Certification
Presenters    Chris Solomons
        Blaine Shepard

7v7 Training for 10U
Presenters    Jeff McClure
•    A lot of this information is in the coaching manual and online training for 10U.
•    New information: use proper terminology. Coaches do training sessions, you practice at home. Field=pitch, spread out=gain width, get the ball=retain possession, lots of penetration and it only takes 30 seconds
•    Use guided questions to help players think and learn for themselves. Instead of: “I saw we were creating width by the players stretching to the sidelines and moving the ball forward”, say “We created width, how did we do that?”
•    Technical development is priority over tactical development
•    Teach players to recognize visual cues
•    Encourage individuals to practice at home
•    Worry less about positions and more about areas of responsibilities

9v9 Training for 12U
Presenters    Jeff McClure
•    A lot of this information is in the coaching manual and online training for 12U. Most of the slides were exactly the same as the 10U session
•    New Information: emphasize process in addition to results (development vs winning)
•    Make it fun but challenging

Women Coach Recruitment & Retention
Presenters    Branden- Pleasant Hill, CA
        Kate- Davis, CA
        Sam Conselman- Davis, CA
•    “You Can Be It if You Can See It”
•    Women coaches make up 28% of coaching staff, nationally.
•    Gender and perceptions of leadership effectiveness differs between men and women. Men perceive they are more capable of leadership roles where women perceive they are NOT capable
•    Broke up into small groups (best part of the EXPO) and discussed the following issues:
o    What positive values can you use to recruit women?
-    Positive Role Model
-    Active Involvement with child
-    Community
o    What resources are needed to make women successful in regions?
-    Mentors
o    Retention Obstacles
-    Time commitment
-    Primary caregiver for family
-    Not seen as equal
-    Perceived lack of knowledge
-    Ill fitting
o    What are things to encourage female volunteers
-    Resources for success coaching (coach manual)
-    Co-coaches vs. head and assistant coach
•    Need to measure success
o    Get data from region
o    If we don’t continually measure & report how we are doing how can we improve? Especially to our AYSO executives

Coaching Female Players
Presenters    Branden- Pleasant Hill, CA
        Kate- Davis, CA
        Sam Conselman- Davis, CA
•    Need to consider bodies of female players, hormone cycles, anatomy differences in genders
•    *Create a list for menstrual cycle kits for female teams to go in coach’s bag*
•    Broke up into small groups to discuss the following issues:
o    What does a supportive environment look like?
-    Greet each player before training sessions
-    Team building drill for cohesiveness instead of individual skill based drills
-    Flexibility to take time to talk with a player who is struggling, even during a training session
-    Allowing players to lead drills or warm-ups
o    How can you communicate to female players?
-    Encourage leadership, it empowers them more
-    Be approachable
-    Ask guided questions
-    PIE-Positive instructional encouragement
o    How to promote participation of female players?
-    Play with friends
-    Collaborative environment
-    Playing if parent is a coach
o    What are some effective coaching strategies used when working with female athletes?
-    Letting them pick the warm-up or activities
-    Shout-outs at the end of a game, where each player pick another player to say one thing, they did great during the game

One Team One Goal
Presenters    Eric Moody- Davis, CA

        Jock Hamilton- Davis, CA

Chris Solomons- AYSO Play!
•    Positive coaching does beyond the players
•    AYSO team=Coaches, refs, parents, players, volunteers, community, board members
•    We talked about the role of the coaches, refs, and parents and how we all interact with one another to create AYSO

Coach Admin Training Certification-Katie
•    4 Takeaways: development over winning, quality training, age appropriate, have fun/inspire players
•    Discuss job description and resources available
•    Chain of communication
o    Region: To Train
o    Area: Support Training
o    Section: Communicate Training
o    National: Develop Training
•    Coach admin is involved in coaching planning calendar, coaching budget, coach recruitment, and coach retention
•    This is where Region 149 is going above and beyond all other regions. Our coaches have the game reports to discuss issues/ask for help. A coach evaluator can help and so can the age division representative, coach admin, assistant RC and RC. Many regions only have the coach admin for coaches to talk to and get help

Challenger Sports
Jack Drew- Regional Sales Director
•    Wants to loop in RC to discuss the pathway of bringing our camps to us in Region 149
•    They don't nearly do as much as they want to do in OR and working with AYSO's in OR would be a dream of Jack’s. His coaches drive right through Eugene & Salem on a weekly basis
•    They supply the coaching staff for camps. Their camp fees would be a little bigger than AYSO Play! But a portion comes back to the region unlike UK camps.

[CorvallisAYSO] Week 6 Recap & End of Season Details
 5/15/25 2:47 PM

Hi Coaches,

We had another fantastic Saturday of soccer, thank you all for your continued dedication to making this season such a success!

Each week, we’re seeing more game reports highlighting strong pre-game conversations between coaches. These chats not only help set expectations but also contribute to smoother, more enjoyable experiences for the players. Great work! These conversations go a long way, especially when teams are short on players or when adjustments need to be made on the fly.

As we wrap up Week 6 and head into the final weekend of the season, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Flexibility in Lopsided Games: Remember, no one on the field is a professional. When your team pulls ahead by 3 or 4 goals, start making adjustments early to keep the game balanced and fun for everyone. Encourage your more skilled players to work on less dominant aspects of their game.

Sportsmanship – Celebrations: Please talk to your players at practice and before games to reinforce respectful behavior. We want goals to be celebrated, but with class and humility. Remind players that respect is key on the field. Soccer is a passionate game, but trash talking and taunting have no place in it. Encourage players to compete hard, play fair, and let their game speak for itself. Good sportsmanship isn’t just about following the rules, it’s about honoring the game and each other.

Shout-Outs:
We’ve seen some excellent examples this week of coaches going above and beyond to create fun and supportive environments. Here are a few highlights:

The game was amazing. The coaches on the other team were supportive and interacting in a professional manner with both teams. The spectators were great as well. Overall, it was a great game!

This was a great game. My players have all turned a corner since our last practice. We made less goals, but I saw so much more passing, engagement, support for teammates, and satisfaction from our players. They did very well, and they knew it. I'm very proud of them and so are they.

What’s coming up:
Registration is now open for Fall 2025! If you would like to coach again next season, please sign up as soon as possible. The sooner we know you’re returning, the sooner we can begin forming teams. Please also encourage your players to register now, player registration for fall is open as well.

5-A-Side Tournament Reminder: It’s not too late to register a team for the 5-A-Side tournament happening on Saturday, May 31st, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Register your team and find more details here: https://www.corvallisayso.org/programs/5-a-side.html

Equipment Return: If you are not entering a 5-A-Side team, you may return your equipment after your last game this Saturday at the safety sheds. A tent will be available for gear drop-off. More information about equipment return will be sent soon.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner: We’d love to celebrate you! Join us for a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on Friday, May 30th, from 6:30–8:00 PM at Papa’s Pizza. Bring your families and enjoy a slice on us as a thank you for your incredible support. We’ll also be recognizing the recipients of the Coach of the Year, Referee of the Year, and Volunteer of the Year awards. Please come help us cheer them on!

Thank you again for your time, energy, and commitment. This season, over 1,000 kids in the Corvallis area were able to learn, grow, and play soccer because of you. We hope to see all of you back on the field this fall.

Enjoy your final game this weekend—and remember to have fun!

Thank you,

Katie Zeiner

SUMMER CAMPS: AYSO PLAY! has a Mother's Day discount if you are interested (here).

Normal Game Day Reminders:
  • Wear your uniform/jersey over all other clothing, dark athletic shorts, and shin guards under your team socks. Home team wears red, away team wears blue (Not sure? Bring both).
  • Leave the jewelry/watch at home, no jewelry.
  • Leave the pets at home. No Pets: No pets within 100ft of the playing areas during any AYSO activities, games, or practices.
  • No matter how intense the game can be, kids need cheerful support from the sidelines. Please do not offer negative comments about the game, coaches, referees, or teammates in a players' presence. Something to report, Kids Zone form (here).
  • Sit 4ft back from the field on the side with the spectator sign, behind the spectator line. Spectators of field 92 & 93, please look to set up in an area away from any potential incoming shots from a neighboring field.
Field Takedown: Game Ending at 12:15 or 1:30??? No other team? Anything that is not a goal or net should be picked up from the field and dropped off at the brown fields shed.

Coaches
Please review the parent section above and the Technical Area rules section (here).

5-A-Side: see prior email, but please talk with your team this week to see if you, your manager, or a referee wants to build a squad to play.

Injuries
Please approach injuries with the mantra, when in doubt, sit them out. Hit in the head with the ball, sit them out & evaluate them. Nasty fall, sit them out & evaluate them. If you see a potential injury of your player, that the referee misses, one method is to call out to the referee, "Ref, injury, I need to sub an injured player", wait for the stoppage and attend to your player.

Pets @ Fields = NO
No pets are allowed within 100ft of a playing field. I could use your help reminding families, feel free to pause the activity if needed. This is important!!! as we have had dog bites. Possible service animal?... ask (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. All non-service animals need to be 100ft from the field for activities to continue.

Referees
Please review the parent and coach sections above.

Injuries
For you, the mantra is a little different... when in doubt, sub them out. Remember, you can stop a game at any time for injury or potential injury.

Pets @ Fields
No pets are allowed within 100ft of a playing field. I could use your help reminding families, feel free to stop the game. This is important!!!
Possible service animal?... ask (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability, and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. All non-service animals need to be 100ft from the field for activities to continue.

 [CorvallisAYSO] 5-A-Side Team/Player Registration
 5/08/25 1:20 PM

Hi AYSO Volunteers,

1st - 8th players can participate in 5-A-Side. Ideally, a volunteer signs up a squad of 4-5 players, but free agents are also allowed.

A fun series of games for players to explore many positions, in an often high scoring game. The day is filled with many opportunities to network, as you move from one 15 min game to another over about a 3-hour period.

Register Your Team

Game Day: Saturday, May 31st, 2025

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • This has a cost of $5 per player, paid in cash or check (to AYSO) on game day.
    • Funds cover costs, participant medals, and raise money for field/playing space in Benton County.
    • Scholarship players can sign up/play for free.
  • Each team plays 4-5 games, over about 3 hours on Saturday, between 9am - 2pm.

  • Volunteers:
    • Team/Squad Coach: Any current referee, team manager, or coach can fill this role. You are tasked with checking in, organizing players for each game, assigning playing positions, and running substitutions.
    • Center Referee: Any current referee can fill this role. You would sign up in one hour blocks. You can swap on game day.
  • Teams/Divisions:
    • Each team needs a unique lead coach, you will likely have overlapping games, and you will need someone to lead the squad/team.
    • Players should be on and stay on a single team. Only exceptions are allowed for squads that are short, need balancing, or substituting for a sick/injured player.
    • Kinder would need to play up with 1st grade, we are not doing a kinder division.
    • 1st & 2nd grade is 4-7 players on a squad, games are 4 vs 4. (coaches run the game)
    • 3/4th, 5/6th, & 7/8th grade is 5-8 players on a squad, games are 5 vs 5. (referees run the game)
  • Notable Rule Modifications:
    • Games are 15 min, 7 min halves, w/ 5 min between games, games start and stop by a central horn.
    • Any time, on-the-fly substitutions like hockey.
    • Kickoff is an indirect free kick (IFK), along with the normal drop ball & throw-in/kick-in.
    • Keeper 1 bounce kick, dropkick, punt, or throw cannot cross half in the air, indirect free kick (IFK) is at half.
    • No offside.
    • 1st/2nd: No throw-in, do a kick-in or dribble-in instead.
    • 1st/2nd: No keepers (no goal hanging allowed).
    • 1st/2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th: No deliberate slides (IFK) or slide tackles (direct free kick (DFK)).
    • 3rd/4th/5th/6th: No deliberate heading, restart is an indirect free kick (IFK).
    • No build out line, no penalty area, and no penalty kick.

Register Your Team < or free agent

Pets/Dogs/Goats/Cats?
No pets near any of the fields. No pets within 100 feet of the game fields. Hundreds of people, loud horns, music, it only takes one dog bite to ruin a love for animals.

Outside Players?
If they registered for AYSO this school year, they can play. Please be sure you balance if you have multiple squads.

Balancing, How?
5-A-Side favors big kickers and a lot of energy, look to balance those players first. Only distributions from the hands of the goalkeeper are restricted by how far they can go in the air, you can score a goal from a goal kick (Most free kicks are direct. Kickoff, drop ball, and throw-in/kick-in cannot score a goal directly).

Food?
Yes, you can bring food, but you cannot use a flame and cook the food at an AYSO event.

Free Substitution?
There is free, any time, substitution. The substituted player must leave the field before the replacing player comes on. Again, this can be done at any time without needing to check with the referee. If too many players are actively playing on the field, it is a restart for the other team at half, if a goal was scored and too many were playing on the field, the goal would be reversed.

Offside?
None. Players are in play anywhere on the field.

Goalkeeper throw or punt? Single bounce kick?
Cannot cross the half in the air. If it travels over half without touching anything else, the opposing team restarts (IFK) from half about where it crossed.
The single bounce kick is closing the loophole where a keeper throws the ball hard at the ground, then kicks it as it is coming back down after that first touch of the ground. If it hits the ground twice before they hit it in the air, that is okay.

Central Horn Timer?
Once that horn goes to start a half, you can start, even if the other team is not on the field. The horn does the timed start and stop of play.

Kick-off?
Home team (team 1) starts the first kick-off, away team (team 2) kicks off after the half, see the game schedule. If the kicking off team isn’t ready, the other team may kick off if the referee allows. Teams cannot score directly from a kickoff.

Penalty Kick?
No penalty area will be marked, just a goal area, so no penalty kick. Remember, no restarts for fouls can happen within a goal area, they need to be placed outside the goal area.

Game Cards?
No game cards are required, no tracking of scores will be done.

Players Near Goal?
1st / 2nd grade players should be discouraged from goal hanging. Keeping at least a few feet away from the goal line. Since the goals are small, and no players can use hands, players should not be sitting in the goals.

Restart Distance?

3/4th it is 4 yards or the goal line. 5/6th it is 6 yards or the goal line. 7/8th it is 8 yards or the goal line. No restarts should take place in the marked goal area, except a goal kick. Since 1st/2nd has no goal area, move the ball 4 yards away from the goal (parallel to the infraction).

 [CorvallisAYSO] Game Day 5/3 - Week 5
 5/03/25 6:15 AM

All AYSO Families,

Please review your sections below.

Parents & Team Managers
No matter how intense the game can be, kids need cheerful support from the sidelines. Please do not offer negative comments about the game, coaches, referees, or teammates in a players' presence. This sets a bad example, which can negatively influence a player's motivation and overall experience. Please make every effort to foster a friendly and nonviolent atmosphere. If you have an item to report, please use the new Kids Zone form (here).

Leave the pets at home. No Pets: No pets near the playing areas during any AYSO activities, games, or practices.

Coaches
Please review the parent section above and last week's Technical Area rule proposal.

Player Celebration
Last week I mentioned the need to tamp down on excessive celebrations, I would like to add that you please ensure any celebrations take place in your team's half of the field. For example, score the goal, all players go back to your half, and high five each other on your half of the field.

Referees
Please review the parent and coach sections above.

Injuries
For you, the mantra is a little different... when in doubt, sub them out. Remember, you can stop a game at any time for injury or potential injury.

Subs & Time Management - Fields 91/92/93
Subs happen at 6 min intervals (natural breaks in play). You tell the coaches this, you let them know when the sub breaks are happening, and you don't do subs at other times (unless it's an injury). Every other subbing period can be a longer break, if needed (quarters), but the clock is running!

Thank You,

This Saturday
Wed 4/30/2025 4:16 PM

R149 Referees,

Thank you for the time you are about to give to the players of soccer in the mid-Willamette!

If you haven't settled on the exact time that you will serve, please do so with the scheduling software, here. I know that you can sign up on the paper schedule at the fields, but if you sign up online beforehand (and afterwards, that works, too), you will get the automatic reminder to submit a game report.

Which reminds me, we have two things to discuss this week.

1. SEND ME YOUR GAME REPORTS. Do the online form, write on the cards, send me an email, launch a pigeon. Just get me something about how it went and if anything went right or wrong. Actually, don't even try to decide if what happened is right or wrong, just send me a report. Thank you!

2. Subs and time management on fields 91/92/93.

Subs happen at 6min intervals (natural breaks in play). You tell the coaches this, you let them know when the sub breaks are happening, and you don't do subs at other times (unless it's an injury). Everyother subbing period can be a longer break (quarters and half time), but the clock is running!

Oh yeah, one more thing.

3. Have fun, make sure the players are having fun, and that the coaches and spectators are helping the players all have fun.

Thank you for all that you do!

Chris

 Week 4: Game Comment Updates
 4/28/25 8:16 PM

Coaches, Assistant Coaches, and Managers:

Please note the following Game Comments and observations from our Week 4 competitions:

Celebrations
  • Positive Coaching - balancing rosters, sharing players, communicating adjustments, showing empathy toward opponent, honoring the Coach Box, creating activities that are fun and build ball skills, pulling players who are injured to administer care
  • Sportsmanship -  players switching teams to create balanced on-field numbers, beautiful "Cheer Tunnels" for opponents, lending a hand to a fallen opponent, clapping in support of an injured player, thanking a referee, owning a mistake.
  • Player Development - coaches stepping up to officiate in a manner fair to both teams, coaches seeking help from other coaches, coaches seeking extra training, players adjusting their style of play to include other teammates.

Opportunities:

  • Excessive Celebration - Cartwheels after scoring is not appropriate. Have players give High-5's, and quickly restart the game.
  • Unequal Playing Time -  Teams (with subs) keeping key players on the field for the entire game. All players will be subbed out during a game.
  • Violation of Coach Box  - Coaches are walking onto the field to celebrate during a game. Stay in the Coach Box, and cheer on your players.
  • Injuries - Leaving players in the game after a forceful hit to the head. Stop the game, administer care, sub out player. See Concussion Protocol.
  • Arguing Calls - Coaches coach, referee officiate, spectators cheer... this is the AYSO way.

Overall, our spring season has revealed tremendous player development, and many examples of positive coaching. What seems like a small accomplishment for us may be the necessary catalyst to build a players self-confidence, and self-esteem. Continue to work on the little details and the sport we love will be a sport our players can enjoy, too.

See you on Saturday!

Brad Whitcomb
AYSO Director of Coach Instruction
5U Head Coach

[CorvallisAYSO] Week 4 Game Day 4/26
 4/26/25 6:21 AM

All AYSO Families,

Please review your sections below.
FYI: Kona Ice should be by the soccer sheds.

As a reminder, here are the key items in AYSO's Kids Zone Pledge:
    Kids are #1!
Fun - not winning - is everything.
    Practice proper physical distancing.
Set a proper example of sportsmanship.
Players play, Fans cheer, and Coaches coach.
Respect the volunteer referees... we couldn’t do it without them!
No yelling, swearing or abusive behavior.
No weapons, alcohol, tobacco or drugs.
    Leave no trash behind.
Celebrate the player - win or lose.
NOTE: please feel free to report issues where individuals are not helping keep the area a Kids Zone. You can use the contact us page here: https://corvallisayso.org/form/contact?contact=cvpa

Leave the pets at home. No Pets: No pets near the playing areas during any AYSO activities, games, or practices.

Coaches
Please review the parent section above.

Technical Areas (aka coach boxes, aka team areas).
Law 1 goes into the definition of the technical area, but some clarification is needed. Below are my drafted rules/guidance for this area.
1: The technical area is a painted area on the team sideline of the field, one distinct area is created for each team.
2: The occupants of the technical area are the team coaches (1-2 adults) and team members participating in the match.
3: Those in the technical area must behave in a responsible manner.
4: Individuals must remain within the technical areas confines except in special circumstances, e.g. medical need, bathroom, entering the field of play with permission.
5: Only one person at a time is authorized to convey tactical instructions from the technical area.

Now the tough part... we look to the referee to help enforce laws/rules regarding the technical area during the match, you know, along with managing 14-22 players in an active game. The other tough part is that we ask volunteers to coordinate and communicate to keep the experience safe, fair, & fun for the players, then we put you in a box. Like with the laws of the game, we cannot cover every possible situation, so please keep to the spirit of the game and clearly communicate with fellow volunteers.

This is a first draft, and I'm open to feedback on this, please reply.

Player Celebration
Seems I am never looking for you to give less, but I have a request. We have seen multiple reports of excessive celebrations after goals, I wish I could make this cut a dry as to what is over the top vs what is normal, but I'm asking for your help with this. Either with managing before the match or asking a player to tone down the celebratory sliding, dancing, taunting, jersey over the head, etc. I would appreciate your help with toning down the excessive celebrations. It can be hard to judge, but I look at it this way, would you be okay if a player does the floss in front of you after scoring a goal on you?

Referees
Please review the parent and coach sections above.
If you are able to help with communicating technical area rules and help with addressing excessive celebrations, I would appreciate it. As always, thank you for all your help this season, not an easy job with 40 people watching you, but a necessary one.

 Week 3: Feedback
 4/21/25 7:32 PM

AYSO Coaches & Assistant Coaches,

Week 3 is in the books and overall the games went well for our players. It is important to remember that AYSO Recreation is not EXTRA, nor Club, nor Alliance. The Recreation level is designed to provide new players, developing players and players looking to see if soccer is for them, a place to play, learn, and be supported for their efforts.

Players with Extensive Experience: Some of our Recreation players should be playing for upper-level teams, including EXTRA, Club or Alliance. If a player is allowed to dominate a game due to their experience, a coach must either make the necessary adjustments, or seek assistance to find him/ her a better team.

Players with Experience and Skills: Some of our lower-level (Kinder-2nd) Recreation players should be playing up a grade level.

Coach Behavior: Some coaches are taking passing comments, physical play, and missed calls far too seriously. There are issues we need to address, and will address, but watching some of the games and hearing some of the comments, it's apparent that the basic understanding of Social Emotional Learning is not being honored, or acknowledged.

Player Behavior: Coaches, please remind your players that good sportsmanship happens from the parking lot coming to the field and later to the parking lot after leaving the field. Every action, and every choice of words, is considered part of the game, and thus a "foul". We expect all before game and after game conduct to be civil, positive and professional. As coaches you are responsible for your words and actions just like the players. Rise above the emotions and move on. If you are having a problem, share the issues in your Game Report, or contact  BRAD WHITCOMB, NICOLE CHAPMAN, MICHELLE STROWBRIDGE, or KATIE ZEINER.

RED CARD: Automatic suspension. Misses the following game.

Uneven Scoring: Coaches at the Kinder-2nd Grade level are encouraged to use additional PUGG goals when a team is struggling to score. This method open up play, forces the better team to be more aware of the activity around the extra goals, and encourages the weaker team to look up to find other open scoring opportunities. Again, 12-3 is not acceptable.

AYSO 6 Philosophies: More than just words... we are always trying to address each one for the benefit of the game we love, and the players we lead.
- Good Sportsmanship
- Positive Coaching
- Player Development
- Balanced Teams
- Everybody Plays
- Open Registration

Week 4 is coming up. There is still time to put our best foot forward and build on the smallest of our successes. And always remember, it's Recreation soccer, not the World Cup. Have fun and let them play!

Coaches
All coaches, please report the final score of your game and report any issues in your digital game report link you got this morning.

 AYSO: Referee Clock Management
 4/17/25 5:50 PM

ALL 3rd/4th COACHES PLEASE READ the following clock management rules:

* Coaches and Referees for 3rd/4th grade AYSO core matches,

* Playing time for 3/4 matches is two 25min halves with a 5min break for "half time".

* The clock is running w/o any stoppages, or added time, during the two 25min playing periods and the 5min rest period.

* Substitutes only happen at the 3 subbing opportunities during each half (injury subs for the injured player only can happen any time they are needed). The 3 subbing opportunities happen at regular stoppages in play as close to 6, 12, and 18minutes as feasible. The middle subbing opportunity can be used as a water break on hot days. Coaches and referees should confer and agree on the water break before the match begins.

The clock does not stop for subbing or water breaks. So, to maximize the playing time, have your sub plan for all 6 opportunities worked out ahead of time. That's not always possible, so plan the subs for the next opportunity as soon as you've completed a subbing round so that you are ready. The opportunities happen at roughly 6, 12, and 18min, since play won't be stopped just to make a substitution, you need to be ready to go when subs are called. Don't think of these times as coaching breaks, the clock is running and players want to play!

Thanks,

 AYSO: 2025 - Spring Week 2
 4/13/25 9:04 AM

AYSO Development/ Recreation Coaches,

The first two weeks of our spring season are now complete and, based on the Game Reports we have received, teams are continuing to develop on their fall experiences. To celebrate and learn from what has already occurred, the following observations and/ or game report comments have been made and should be shared with parents, players and spectators, internalized by our coaches:

Celebrate:
* Players lending a hand to an injured opponent
* Coaches making adjustments to balance competition (many doing so without being prompted to)
* Several Coaches embracing "Let Them Play", hesitating to over coach from the sidelines
* Referees calling foul throw-ins and players not complaining
* Referees allowing a single re-throw = skill development
* most Spectators shouting encouragement; letting the coach... coach
* most Coaches honoring the coaching box... lines need to be repainted
* watching a former 5U player develop into a highly competent upper division teammate
* Parents stepping in, in a pinch, to coach or referee
* Players stringing several passes together; working as a team; supporting on defense, anticipating...
* Players/ Coaches working together to keep games fun and competitive
* adding extra goals to encourage scoring, passing, and observing open spaces.

Opportunity:
* some isolated Spectators overstepping their role and encroaching on coach/ player relationship (confuses player... who do I listen to?)
* Spectators sitting on the endline to watch the game... must be on the spectator sideline
* some Players arguing with the referee, or showing disrespect to the referee (older divisions, coach opportunity to settle down player)
* unsportsmanlike verbal/ nonverbal behavior after games (comments and actions)
* Spectator encroachment (red lines still need to be painted to support this expectation)
* some lopsided games (it happens but how it is handled is critical to future player development, and positive coaching)
* seemingly insulting Coach language toward players (You "Blob", etc.); remember... "Positive Coaching".
* Remember: only assigned team volunteers (coach ,asst. coach) in the team box.
  * Excessive yelling/ shouting by Coaches (all major conversations should happen before the game, at half time, and at practice) Let Them Play!
Skill Building: teach proper shielding and blocking; underutilized and highly effective

As your season progresses and communication and team routines are further developed, the celebrations will always out weigh the opportunities. Be patient with your expectations, enjoy the little things that occur during practices and games, and never lose sight of the big picture: Having FUN! and "Let Them Play".

If you are a coach on the receiving end, and morale is not looking good, feel free to propose a forfeit, re-balance the teams, and try a new game/scrimmage with your pinnies. Coaches should make a reasonable effort to balance the game by trying the following options. Always remember to keep referees informed of agreements or additional rules.
      • Step 1 - Adjust Players: up by 3, move strong players into other positions and start adding restrictions (left foot only, only two goals per player, etc.)

    3. No headers or slides. An indirect free kick is awarded for any deliberate heading.
    4. Substitutions are at referee allowed stoppages and quarters. Once a coach confirms with the referee they are allowed to sub a player, they can swap the player(s). This process should be quick, max 15sec. Substituting players should be located at the half line to help the referee see the players needing a swap at the next stoppage.
    5. The remaining rules follow the normal laws of the game.

  9. Help, Information, & Equipment: The Safety and Information Shed (Saturday 8am - 1pm) will have helpers and board members available for questions, equipment replacement, uniform swap, uniform order, etc.

  10. Club Lines person like an Assistant Referee (could be used in any division, no training required, can be a spectator that is 12 years or older)
    1. The only responsibility of the club lines person is to signal when the ball went over the touchline / sideline.
    2. Raise your arm only when the entire ball goes over the entire line.
    3. The Game Coach or Center Referee might ask for a discrete signaling with a thumbs up, thumbs down, or a direction, but you normally do not signal the following...

    17. Coaches can use the game report email sent each Saturday to report any issues or areas of confusion.
    18. Referees can use the game card sent on Saturday to report any issues or areas of confusion. The emailed game card is desired, the physical game card should be used for submitting the digital card.

  8. Game Rules...
    1. 7 vs 7, including goalkeepers.
    2. Quarters (3/4th Grade =12.5 min). Halves (3/4th Grade =25 min).
    3. See the build-out line info video (here) for more details about the rule modifications for this division.
    4. Offside only occurs past the build-out lines. Think of it like you split the 2in center line and moved 1in of the line just above the penalty area on each side.
    5. No headers or slides, players need to stay on their feet. An indirect free kick is awarded for any deliberate header.
    6. Substitutions will occur every 5 minutes with permission from the referee, the player on field should leave before the new player goes on.
DIVISION CHANGE: Last school year, we did free flowing subs, but some volunteers struggled to give equal playing time. So, we are moving to subs every 5 min so we can monitor the playing time if needed.
    7. Once the goalkeeper takes possession of the ball, or when a goal kick has been called by the referee, the defending team (the team without the ball) should immediately run outside the penalty area to the top of the build-out line. No player of the now defending team may enter the build-out area until the ball has been put back into play by the goalkeeper.
    8. Goalkeepers should not drop-kick or punt the ball. Discourage, return the ball to the keeper and ask them to redo with a throw.

      • Do not give the direction of the throw-in.
      • Do not signal fouls.
      • Do not signal when the ball goes in the goal.
      • Do not signal offside.

 [CorvallisAYSO] Prep for Spring Soccer!
 3/14/25 8:45 AM

Hello, all spring soccer families participating this spring!! (if you are getting this email, I have down that someone in your family is joining us)

If you are new, welcome :), and please look at the newbies section. If you are not participating this spring :(, please reply with your player's name or volunteer name so we can remove you. We have placed most new players, but still have some on wait lists to place.

Please look below for updates/sections that might pertain to you.

Newbies (just signed up for spring)
Howdy, I'll be emailing you weekly going forward, so please look out for email subjects with [CorvallisAYSO].

  1. Practice: Could start Mon 3/17, but most coaches do a small get-together, then start a regular practice schedule after spring break. See notes for your grade below.
    1. Preschoolers and kinder players, we do not normally have practices in the week, it is just the Saturday game/activity day. Coaches are encouraged to do a get-together practice early to help ease some of the first day concerns, but that does not always work out, so expect your first thing to be on Saturday 4/5.
    2. 1st & 2nd grade has one practice in the week with the practice times and locations decided by the team coaches, it will be late March when those details are finalized.
    3. Everyone else, the team coaches decide practice times and locations, and it is usually late March when those details are finalized.
  2. Game Days: All games are on Saturday mornings 4/5-5/17 with start times from 8am-1pm. We send out the schedule in late March after spring break, with some divisions earlier or later. Divisions with brackets and older grades will take longer. Only some of the older traveling teams could have games on other days.
  3. Equipment: You can get your two jerseys & socks on the first game day at the Adams school sheds, we will also be selling (cash only) shin guards, used soccer balls, and we have some used shoes if you want to buy or potentially swap. Your player must wear shin guards at all practices and games, so be sure you are always packing those around. The full allowed equipment guide is (here).
  4. Rosters & Requests: We continue to work on player placements up to the first game. Once you are placed, you will get a welcome email to the team site. That includes the basic team roster, but we often send a more detailed roster later, with contact info so you can reach out to coaches. On a Wait List? We will activate you; you need to pay within 3 days, then we will place you with the team. Had a Special Request? If you filled out this form (here), please note, we try and follow your request the best we can. If you are placed, and you see an issue, please reach out to the division coordinator (here).

You will get more info later, hopefully this answers most of your initial questions :). If not, please feel free to reply.

Fall Returners
Welcome back!!!

  1. Calendar: A good start is the region calendar (here) and to connect to any team calendar in Sports Connect.
  2. Jersey: Find the blue and red jersey and the black socks, if not, you can buy them on the first game day at the Adams school sheds.
  3. Roster: You should be able to see the roster on the Sports Connect team page, and you will likely see some folks are no longer around. We are still placing some folks, but before spring break, if you see a buddy is missing, a coach is gone, or anything else, please reach out to your division coordinator (here). If you can help, volunteer for your team, please reach out earlier as they are looking at placements to fill volunteer gaps. FYI: Wait List Registration is still open (here) if you are looking for a friend to join.
  4. Try on Those Cleats: Not fitting, you can try to swap or donate them on the first game day at the Adams school sheds.
  5. Help: I can use field setup help, please sign up to help (here).

Coaches
Thank You for helping this spring! :) Take a look at the pieces above, and below are some added parts for you.

  1. New Coaches: We will be sending more to you directly, be sure you get registered as a volunteer (guide) to start getting the emails.
  2. Returning Coaches: Check your team equipment, we will send out opportunities when you can get replacement items or if you need more equipment.
  3. Practices (coach practice guide)
You could start practices Mon 3/17, it would be good to at least plan a small get-together that week, then start the regular schedule after spring break. Please remember to avoid damaging fields, see a lot of mud, move location. It can take almost a week for a field to recover.
    1. Adams Area: If you practiced at the Adams area, Elaine is assuming you are doing the same schedule again... if not, you need to put in a new request (here). NOTICE: fields will be moving, avoiding swamps, and taking advantage of some opened Adams school space... so might be good to choose a rally point for the first practice.
    2. 509J Schools: It would be good to take a look at the schools to see what might work with wetter weather, then get your reservations done in Online (here).
    3. Philomath Middle School: Expect the baseball areas to be in use, set up a rally point and adjust as you can. Everything outside of baseball and school events are first come, first served.
    4. Everything else, you get what you get. Notice: turf locations have various restrictions and often have costs, if you are looking at something with an agreement/contract and a cost, you need to check with me first. Grass is what we normally use, and we do not cover the cost of renting a space, so that needs to be an agreement among the parents to pay for that.
  4. Training: (sign up here)
We have our spring coach training on Sunday 3/16 for K-2nd 12-3pm & 3rd-6th 3-6pm at Ashbrook gym. Get feedback to questions or issues from coaches that coach players in your division. We will get into practical exercises, so you are walking away with a framework for running all your practices this season!!! You will want to take the online training before, then signup. This page (here) has all the training requirements.
  5. Refresher or Questions?
Please show up and signup for the training on Sunday 3/16 for K-2nd 12-3pm & 3rd-6th 3-6pm at Ashbrook gym. This will be the best opportunity to refresh your memory for the season and get any questions answered. COACHES We got tips and tricks to help you, join us for the training, or to learn more, email coach Katie (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Referees
Thank You for helping this spring! :)

  1. New Referees: We will be sending more to you directly, be sure you get registered as a volunteer (guide) to start getting the emails.
  2. Training: We are working on finalizing the schedule for field training and a season refresher, so hold tight.
  3. We need a referee training coordinator, if you can help Chris, please email him (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Also... always good to double-check you have all your referee equipment, your waterproof bag, and some good shoes for water/mud.

Please expect more season details next week in each division's welcome emails.
Looking forward to a great spring season... dry (in April), short green grass, spring is lookin' good in my head :)

 [CorvallisAYSO] Futsal 1/18 & 1/19
 1/17/25 6:24 PM

Hi All Futsal Families,
Quick info for futsal 1/18 and 1/19 at Ashbrook Independent School.

Please take care during the cold weather this weekend, check for ice.

FOCUS THIS WEEK:
Passing and continuing ball control.

PARENTS DAY 2:
 > 1 > Find a parking spot in the yellow area of the map (here).
 > 2 > Ensure your player has shin guards and shoes appropriate for a basketball court (they can change in the locker rooms).
 > 3 > Remove any watches and earrings at the car, the gym has a water fountain if you do not bring water.
 > 4 > Shepherd your player into the gym using the red guide on the map and into the north entry.
 > 5 > Create a name tag for your player and place it on the player's shorts above the knee.
 > 6 > You can leave or try to find a spot to watch (space is limited, and the option is standing or sitting on the floor).
 > 7 > Players get done at the #:55 for pickup.

COACHES DAY 2:
 > A > Start them with dribbling through gates, two cones. Older ages make the gates 1ft.
 > B > Pivot to getting partners and passing through the gates, moving to the next gate and passing through that. To help mix it up and keep them moving, younger players like passing through adult legs as an option.
 > C > If they have that on lock, passing while in motion would be good, a couple of lines, one with a ball, pass 4-6 times to the end of the court. You can add yourself as an obstacle or add a defender.
 > D > Half court mini-games with Puggs on the sidelines would be good to keep players passing 3v3 playing is ideal, depends on your numbers.
 > E > Get into a full game, if you want to use coaches/volunteers to fill out the team, feel free, but it would be better if they are keepers/defense. Remind adults to play the level of the players and adjust as needed to balance.
 > F > Get the teams started and do stoppages to remind them of the rules (here), we have electronic whistles (handy because you can whistle and talk).
 > G > Keep the game going, rotate the players often. Wrap up by #:50pm, and try a wrap up routine/chant/cheer... next weekend, same time, same place.
Reminders: safe, fair, fun. Safe playing on the court. Balance where you can, even if it is not popular. In most cases if safe and fair are good, fun should result, but feel free to pivot. Keep players out of the marked areas.

FAQ:
Groups? Each 'team' is a group of players in about the same grade, you would be playing with the same group each weekend.
Change Group? If you wish to move to another group, email me with player name and current group. If it is clear another group would be a better fit for your player, we can look at options to move them to another group.

 [CorvallisAYSO] Futsal 1/11 & 1/12
 1/10/25 6:53 PM

Hi All Futsal Families,
Quick info for futsal 1/11 and 1/12 at Ashbrook Independent School.

Attached is a map with yellow parking area and red pointing you to the entry for the gym. See attached map or (here).

PARENTS DAY 1:
Find a parking spot in the yellow area of the map. Ensure your player has shin guards and shoes appropriate for a basketball court. Remove any watches and earrings in the car, the gym has a water fountain if you did not bring water. Shepherd your player into the gym following the red arrow on the map and into the north entry. Another group will likely be playing, so please wait by the stacked bleachers. Please check in on the clipboard to confirm your phone and player details. Create a name tag for your player with the name a coach would call. After the group before is done, you can leave or try to find a spot to watch (the bleachers are not working, space is limited, and no seating is available). Players get done at the #:55 and will be in the gym for pickup. (FYI: the bathroom, also a locker room, from a connected hallway open to the gym.)

PLAYER EQUIPMENT:
You will need shoes that will work on a court (no nubs, no marking/black souls, no cleats) and remember shin guards (we will have some for sale, along with socks).
Please do not bring a soccer ball, we have them.

FOCUS THIS WEEK:
Ball Control, starting and stopping.

COACHES DAY 1:
Someone will be around to help you get started and get the players going at #:00. Get to know the player... center circle calling of name passing activity can be a good start and give you a second to assess players. The next activities would be good to do a dribble around the court, use something to help you force a varied speed or stoppages, we have enough soccer balls for each player. While they dribble around the court, setup cones for gates to dribble through, and transition to something where they try to get through as many gates as they can in a set time. Then a red light, green light is something simple to fall back on. Game? I often ask players to grab a buddy, then I split the buddy groups into teams (game is 5vs5, you should not do more than 6vs6 on the court). One coach manages subs/rotations, have another coach focused on teaching the game on the court. Get the teams started and do stoppages to teach them the rules (here), we have electronic whistles (handy because you cannot whistle and talk). Keep the game going, rotate the players often. Wrap up by #:50pm, and try a wrap up routine/chant/cheer... next weekend, same time, same place.

FAQ:
Cancel/Refund? Please fill out the refund request form (here).

Groups? Each 'team' is a group of players in about the same grade, you would be playing with the same group each weekend.

Change Group? If it is clear another group would be a better fit for your player, we can look at options to move them to another group. Email me with player name and current group.

Low Player Numbers? Coaches could help out with practices or games, but all need to be wearing court shoes and do a pebble check :)

 [CorvallisAYSO] Futsal Registration Reminder
 12/20/24 4:27 PM

AYSO Families 1st-8th Grade,

If you have not already registered, this reminder is for you. Register before 2025, we start playing 1/11.

(Register in Sports Connect)

Futsal is a fast-paced game with many touches on the ball, which will help players improve their skills. It is also a LOT of fun. Our goal for this league is to help players develop, while having fun competing and getting players ready for the spring outdoor soccer season. If your 1st - 8th grader is interested in futsal indoor, please register in Sports Connect. If you have a kinder that can play with 1st graders, you can also register to join. Register in Sports Connect, select the available futsal program, work through the registration process, and complete the checkout.

We build activity groups for our futsal program, 12-16 players are split into groups, spend about 30min practicing, then play a game. The 8 weekend activities (scheduled either Saturday or Sunday, often in the afternoon) are about 50 minutes long and will be played at the Ashbrook Independent School. This session will go from Jan 11th - Mar 16th, placement notifications will happen by Jan, with an activity schedule expected soon after.

FYI: proposed time slots for each group/grade and FAQ are on the futsal webpage (here).

COST: The season/program fee is $60 and will need to be paid by Credit Card in Sports Connect. Players that have not played with AYSO this School Year often need to pay the AYSO non-refundable membership fee of $25.

NOTES:
Sorry, we are not offering this program specifically for Kinder, you would need to join with the 1st grade group.
High School & Adult players, please email to learn about opportunities to play.

 [CorvallisAYSO] Futsal Registration Open
 11/20/24 12:15 PM

AYSO Families 1st-8th Grade,

Futsal is a fast-paced game with many touches on the ball, which will help players improve their skills. It is also a LOT of fun. Our goal for this league is to help players develop, while having fun competing and getting players ready for the spring outdoor soccer season. If your 1st - 8th grader is interested in futsal indoor, please register in Sports Connect. If you have a kinder that can play with 1st graders, you can also register to join.

Registration is open for Futsal (Register in Sports Connect)

Register in Sports Connect, select the available futsal program, work through the registration process, and complete the checkout. If you have a special request, use this request form (here).
Be sure you answer the questions when registering about division, skill, and playing group.

The season/program fee is $60 and will need to be paid by Credit Card in Sports Connect. Players that have not played with AYSO this School Year often need to pay the AYSO non-refundable membership fee of $25. We cannot guarantee that a division will have enough players for an activity group, if that is the case, and we could not place your player, your credit card would be refunded the $60 (if your player is placed, and you cancel or cannot make the schedule, the refund could be $55. After we start the activities, no refunds) (refund form).
NOTICE: Sports Connect charges a non-refundable $2.75 per credit card transaction, so for one player, it could be $62.75.

Basics to Know:

  • The focus is more on control, ball handling, & passing.
  • The location is a basketball court, court or non-marking athletic shoes are needed, & player contact will be highly discouraged.
  • Scheduling will be in hour blocks.
  • A head coach will warm up the same group of players each session, split up the group, & run/oversee a futsal game.

NEW Volunteers: During player registration, I am asking for volunteer indication. Once I know the interest/numbers, I will indicate that the individual needs to register as a volunteer. This saves us the cost of a potential Background Check, and it saves you the hassle of registering before we know you are needed.

EXISTING Volunteers (Head Coaches): Please register as a volunteer online in Sports Connect, if your account is not tied to your player, ensure the helper/volunteer spot in the player registration form has your name, so we can connect the dots.

(Register in Sports Connect)

OTHER NOTES:
Sorry, we are not offering this program specifically for Kinder, you would need to join with the 1st grade group.
High School & Adult players, please email to learn about opportunities to play.
Spring registration for outdoor starts in February, the first outdoor games are in April, futsal ends before spring outdoor.

  • Bring shin guards, or you cannot play.
  • Middle school players need turf shoes. Everyone else, court shoes are fine.
  • Wear/Bring a white shirt.
  • Remind players they play with this group each time, and each time they will be split into teams. Sometimes with a friend, sometimes against.

Not Playing?
: Refund Form (here), in some divisions we have a wait list. Any other issues, please reply to this email with the group and player legal name.

Typical Activity Day

Activity Day Gear: The sports park will have a bag with soccer balls and pinnies for players, stored at the front desk. One bag will be for 3rd - 6th, the other bag will be 7th-8th.

Parents: Ensure you player is wearing the right equipment and has a white shirt; first activity day, sign the release form (one needed per year) and turn it in; drop your player off with the head coach by the benches next to the field; if you are staying for the activity, I suggest you go upstairs to spectate and cheer (note: players can hear your conversations and comments from the balcony); if you have young children with you, consider the downstairs space by the benches (do not kick soccer balls against walls by benches); from entering the field, the activity is about 42min, be back to meet your player in the lobby at that time.

Players: Wear a white shirt (or team designated color and bring a white shirt); standard soccer restrictions ([no watch, earrings, etc.], socks over shin guards, court shoes (okay for Elementary Players) or turf shoes (required for Middle Schoolers); the field could be cold at start, but you will warm up fast; enter on the ground floor and check in with your manager at the bench seats right next to the field; when your manager says okay, enter the field and place your equipment in one of the player boxes, after the other team is out; warm up, stretch, and wait for positions from your manager; after the activity, grab your equipment and leave the field to the lobby.

Head Coaches: Bring a printing of the full roster, ideally try to split up the players into proposed teams ahead of arriving. The referee could have a roster for you (use the roster for sub/player tracking); if you are the first activity, or the team before you uses different size soccer balls, ask the front desk to check for the activity day bag for your size; gather your players in the waiting area by the benches (or on the field if the referee is present); check player equipment on arrival and confirm players for your proposed teams on roster; enter the field with your team after the prior activity clock is done (about 5min before your start time according to the field clock); figure out a main team box to the west and place your equipment; talk with the other Head Coach(es), find the pinnies, and decide who will wear them; indicate positions to players (1 GK (use a rotation if needed), 2 defenders, 2 midfield (your energizer bunnies), 2 forwards, remainder to box), give the goal keeper a unique color pinnie; after activity start, do on the fly substitutions (players should only sit out for 6min at a time), and mark the subs in the roster; I use a method where I sub a player every 2min (w/ 3subs) or every 3min (w/ 2subs); at half YOU HAVE 1MIN, swap the goal keeper (if they want to stay in the position, press them to play the field), and do your 1 sub; at the end of the activity, gather all the player items from the team box and leave the field, we have little time between activities.

Referees (if none, Head Coaches): Get team roster from front desk (they will often highlight the players missing something); if clock is off, ask them to turn it on; enter the field and place your gear in the box to the south east; check the sports park clock (often 6 min slow) and set the activity clock to count down to about 2min before the activity should start; check w/ managers for players missing liability forms (you can give them the roster); check player equipment (standard soccer stuff, no outdoor cleats)(larger players need turf shoes); ensure the teams have consistent colors and the keeper is a unique color; get a activity ball, if it is flat the front counter has a pump; INDOOR IS FAST, please do everything you can to keep the pace and get folks playing; set the clock for 18min, start the 18min within 1min of activity start no matter what; you do not need to put scores on the board; at half set the clock for 1min or less to catch up; start the last 18min, 30seconds after the half time clock ran out, no matter what; take all of your equipment and help get activity equipment off the field to the front desk if it is the last game of the day.

 [CorvallisAYSO] Indoor Soccer Registration Open
 10/12/24 9:30 AM

Parents of 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th graders,

Indoor soccer registration for playing weekends at the Corvallis Sports Park is open...

3rd/4th Grade Division (Girls | Boys) || 5th/6th Grade Division (Girls | Boys) || 7th/8th Grade Division (Girls | Boys)

We build activity groups for our indoor soccer program, creating groups of 14-20 players that are split into teams each scheduled day, then play a game. All activities will be played at the Corvallis Sports Park. The 6 activities are about 36 minutes long. Four of the activities are on Saturday, with the remainder landing on a Sunday. Both Saturday and Sunday have start times between 12-6pm. There are no practices. This session will go from Nov - Dec, team notifications will happen by end of Oct, with an activity schedule expected soon after.

Register (Sports Connect).

Select a program that is available and work through the registration process. If you have a special request, use this request form (here) (remember to select indoor for the program)

AGAIN: we are building activity groups based on the divisions above. 14-20 players show up and split into teams, then play a game. Each group would have a referee and at least one team leader / head coach to help with substitutions.
Be sure you answer the questions when registering about grade and skill.

The season/program fee is $50 and will need to be paid by Credit Card in Sports Connect. Players that have not played with AYSO this School Year will need to pay the AYSO non-refundable membership fee of $20. We cannot guarantee that a division will have enough players for teams, if that is the case, and we could not place your player, your credit card would be refunded the $50 (if your player is placed, and you cancel, the refund could be $45. After we start the season/activities, no refunds) (refund form).

NEW Volunteers (Referees & Head Coach): During player registration, we are asking for volunteer indication. Once we know the team framework, we will indicate that the individual needs to register as a volunteer. This saves us the cost of a potential Background Check, and it saves you the hassle of registering before we know you are needed.

EXISTING Volunteers (Referees & Head Coach): Please register as a volunteer online in Sports Connect, if your account is not tied to your player, ensure the helper/volunteer spot in the player registration form has your name so we can connect the dots. You will not need to go through the background check process again.

Coach Input = Improved Player Experiences
 10/14/24 1:24 PM

Head Coaches & Assistant Coaches,

Many of your Game Reports have provided valuable information and insight necessary to provide a more positive playing experience. The following observations were noted during Week 6 and speak to the importance of AYSO's 6-Philosophies, and the Social Emotional Learning model:

  • Heading: Coaches are noticing younger division players (8U) either heading the ball, or attempting to head the ball, during a game. Please remind your players that heading is not allowed until they are older.
  • Cherry-picking: For divisions without "offsides", reports are noticing an increase in cherry-picking where players hover around the opposing goal waiting for the ball to be launched to them. In an effort to prepare players for the older divisions, remind players that there is a difference between "being open" and simply "waiting for the ball". A player that waits for a ball is not in a position to support the team on defense. Better for coaches to change player mindset at the younger divisions.
  • Coaching Box: Technical lines and boxes were added mid-season, and overall have helped manage team, coach, and spectator movement. These lines are now very faint and coaches are beginning to encroach onto the field, and into their opponents space. For some, encroachment happens from shear passion for the game. For others, it might be a bad habit that isn't meant to be disrespectful, but is viewed as disrespectful. Coaches need to know where they are along the sidelines. It might even be necessary (and humorous) to have someone on your sidelines pull you back to where you belong...
  • Grade-Level Discrepancy: This observation has been made mostly by the 3rd/4th grade teams. Players in this age range can have noticeable size and weight differences, and if too many of the larger players end up on a team, competition can be imbalanced. AYSO is aware of this issue and is looking at how team formation can be improved for next fall. Some teams will be together for the spring, and other teams will be dismantled. Whatever the situation, how coaches approach play on the field should be a reflection of AYSO's 6-Philosophies and our understanding of Social Emotional Learning.
  • Blowout v Forfeit: Several games had large discrepancies in their scoreline. Most winning coaches tried to adjust play to help curb scoring, and create opportunities for other players. Some coaches waited too late to make critical adjustments. Regardless of the outcome, ALL coaches must be willing to discuss forfeiting. At the recreational level, coaches should recognize an opportunity to improve play when other adjustments are hampering player development. The beauty of needing to forfeit is that teams can mix their players, even the play, and develop new relationships. Forfeiting allows strong players to remain on the field, or in a scoring position. Parents and spectators may not approve, or understand the reasons, yet the bold move is a reflection of positive coaching, good sportsmanship, and "balanced teams".
  • High-5 Line: Many teams are having fun with their post game High 5's lines. Some teams even do a High 5 tunnel. Whatever celebration formation you use, please remind your players to demonstrate true sportsmanship through appropriate language and actions. It only takes one word, or action, to derail a positive post game celebration.
  • Referee/ Assistant Referee: Coaches, please remember that when a game includes one or two assistant referees (AR), it is the center referee (CR) that need to decide if the AR's are experienced enough to call flagrant fouls. Many of our referees are either new to the role, or lack enough experience to determine the nuances of player actions. Prior to the start of a game, the CR typically discusses with the AR's what to flag and what not to flag. Since the referee team meets to review their individual responsibilities, it is critical that the coaches discuss with the CR how the game will be officiated (based on the experience of the referee team). Coaches must keep their emotions under control, especially in front of their players, and allow the game to play out. Nothing is achieved when heated comments from adults spill over to the players. With good pre-game communication, many on-field calls can be processed by coaches and players in a more constructive manner. This should result in a positive playing/ coaching experience.

We are heading towards our final Saturday of Fall soccer, and overall the season has been another success. Let's take the things we have learned over the last six weeks and put forth a positive and memorable Week 7 performance that we can all celebrate.

AYSO Director of Coach Instruction

Week 5: Review & Fine Tuning Play
 10/08/24 9:26 AM

Coaches, Referees and Parents,

Teams are showing dramatic development throughout the season. Scores are coming from a wide range of players, teams are experiencing their first win, coaches are witnessing individual and team growth that are beyond expectation, and referees are being recognized for solid game management.

Over the course of the season several emails went out looking for support from parents and spectators. Coaches, please let these valuable people know how much AYSO appreciates their own development. We are hearing from others that the atmosphere around the fields and around the facility is a much more positive and enjoyable place to be on a Saturday. This only happens when everyone is on the same page.

A quick reminder to our coaches and player regarding goalkeeper safety. As much as we know that a loose ball is a "playable ball", remember that goalkeepers often need to be on the ground to stop a ball, but in this position are also in close proximity to an attacking players feet. If a referee is allowing play to continue, then be careful how you attack the ball. Player safety is more important than scoring, however in the event that a collision does happen, please stay with the injured player and let them know that you are "sorry".

And finally, we are hearing of tremendous sportsmanship this season: Players clapping for an opponent, players lifting up an opponent, and players switching to play for an opponent. These actions create the fun and competitive soccer environment we all want to experience, and that is the AYSO way to play!

See you Week 6!

 Week 4: Updates & Observations
 9/29/24 1:38 PM

AYSO Coaches, Players and Spectators:

Week 4 is completed and based on Game Reports, Saturday was our best game day this season. True, there were some unbalanced results but scores don't always tell the whole story. Please know that our AYSO Board will meet in the off-season to revisit the topic of "Balanced Teams", and how it might look in the spring. Until then all we can do is seek assistance from coaches, and understanding from players and spectators. The comments below are meant for basic housekeeping only. The weekend was an overall success.

Coaches:
  • 6U-7U should consider adding PUGG goals when a game is unbalanced. Adding or removing players is one option, adding an additional goal to the endline is another. Coaches are cautioned from viewing the additional goal as a weakness. Rather, an additional goal helps inexperienced teams to look up and look wide helping break their "tunnel vision".
  • 8U-10U should make adjustments sooner than later. Several games had multiple scores within a few minutes, several teams were missing players and coaches. If coaches meet beforehand, these adjustment will be more natural.
  • If coaches are unable to attend a game, please reach out to your replacement and let them know how "balancing scores" is done. One game had parents stepping in without any idea of their role during the game. As much as their effort was appreciated, unexpected disruption and confusion can spill over to the players.
  • Over-Coaching usually comes from frustration, passion, or inexperience. Spend practice time getting players prepared for competition, and game breaks refining play. Many players will shut down when coaches over instruct during a game. They can feel as though everything they are doing is wrong, even when the message was meant to improve player development.

Players:
  • Overall you should be proud of your efforts last Saturday. Referees and coaches gave you high marks for sportsmanship, player development, and positive behavior.
  • Players can always improve: After scoring remember to celebrate in a manner that shows respect to the other team. High-5's, fist bumps work. What method of celebration has your team adopted?
  • Player Down: Amazing to see you all support an injured player. We had a serious injury on Saturday and attending players, coaches and spectators demonstrated a high level of respect for the player. You should be proud of yourselves.

Spectators:
  • Recreation soccer is a messy activity to play and watch. Emotions run the spectrum, as do the skill levels, coaching experience, and referee experience. For the sake of the young players, curbing ones enthusiasm is the first step in supporting your team.
  • Referees are hearing more positive comments, especially when a call doesn't go your teams's way. Shake it off and let them play. You have been doing a much better job of respectfully voicing your opinion, even acknowledging when a call deserved to be call against your team. That action demonstrates an understanding of what it is to be an AYSO fan.

Week 5 is coming up, and we all have another opportunity to build on our previous successes. Continue to communicate within your team, continue to share Game Reports, and continue to develop a high-quality playing experience for our young players.

See you all next Saturday.

Brad Whitcomb
AYSO Director of Coach Instruction

Field Takedown: Game Ending at 12:15 or 1:30??? No other team? Anything that is not a goal or net should be picked up from the field and dropped off at the brown fields shed.

Coaches
Please pick up the game cards and picture day packets today at the safety shed. Hand out the packets to parents when you can, and fill out the game card for the game. Be sure the referee leaves with the game card or that the card gets deposited in the referee shed box.

Kinder, 1st, 2nd, & 3rd/4th Substitutions: Please adopt a fixed substitution opportunity for both teams every 5 to 6 minutes of play. When play stops after about 5 or 6 minutes of play, the center coach/referee will hold the restart and ask the coaches to do their subbing. This helps ensure EVERYONE PLAYS and reduces the instances where some players are played significantly less. This means 3 or 4 sub opportunities per half and no long 'quarter' break.

Game Cards/Reports: Fill out the game card for the game, I would have a parent pre-fill all of them alphabetical, then add jersey numbers as you can each game day. Be sure the referee leaves with the game card or that the card gets deposited in the referee shed box. ALSO Continue to fill out your game report that you got this morning, we read those digital reports and try to communicate with folks as fast as we can to address issues or questions.

Suspending A Match: K-2nd, as the coach leading a game, you have the ability to suspend (temporarily stop for a reason other than anything happening in the match itself) a match to help deal with any situation that is not SAFE, FAIR, or FUN. Coaches, please help use this power by communicating with the center coach/referee if you feel that the match needs a timeout to deal with situations that are interfering with the players' experience. Examples include, any activity on the sidelines that is distracting players, coaches, referees and keeping the match from being SAFE, FUN, or FAIR. Suspending a match seems a drastic action, but since you intend to resume as soon as you can, feel free to use this tool. Short of suspending a match, you can seek outside assistance from circulating board members, coach, and referee support staff (often in pink or blue shirts).

3rd/4th, 5th/6th, & 7th/8th, Spectator Lines and Technical Areas: We have added a setback line on the spectator side of each field to help families set up to watch a few feet back from the touchline. Please help them make use of this nice new feature! We have also added technical areas for each team on the team side of each field. These areas are for team officials and substitutes and all the team gear. This keeps everything away from the touch line and helps make it clear when players are requesting a substitution.

Referees
Remember to check in and place a check by your name on the referee schedule at the referee shed (confirming attendance, of sorts). Look for any notices. If you need help, look for a referee that is not in yellow (usually light blue or pink). Each game time slot, is 75 min, you need to end on time, so shorten the games as needed.

3rd/4th Substitutions NOTE: Please talk to the coaches and remind/confirm we use a fixed substitution method for both teams after every 5 to 6 minutes of play. When play stops after about 5 or 6 minutes, hold the restart and ask the coaches to do their subbing. This helps ensure EVERYONE PLAYS and reduces the instances where some players are played significantly less. This means 3 or 4 sub opportunities per half and no long 'quarter' break.

Please help them make use of this nice new feature! We have also added technical areas for each team on the team side of each field. These areas are for team officials and substitutes and all the team gear. This keeps everything away from the touch line and helps make it clear when players are requesting a substitution.

Game Cards/Reports: Coaches can manage the game cards during the game, but please gather the cards after, confirm the details, and deposit the cards at the referee shed. The player numbers on the cards do not matter, but the name is the important part. Please still report on the final score of your game and report any issues in your digital game card. If you are picking up a game, you can go to the referee schedule, filter to the day, select the game, and fill out the game card.

Suspending A Match: Remember that you, as the referee, have the ability to suspend (temporarily stop for a reason other than anything happening in the match itself) a match to help deal with any situation that is not SAFE, FUN, or FAIR. Coaches, please help use this power by communicating with the referees if you feel that the match needs a timeout to deal with situations that are interfering with the players' experience.  Coaching Tips for Week 3
 9/19/24 9:00 PM

Dear AYSO Coaches,

As we move into Week 3, let’s focus on what really matters—helping young players grow as athletes, teammates, and members of their community. Let's ensure that both players and volunteers leave the field every Saturday wanting to come back for more.

Avoid Blowouts: As coaches, we know that games with final scores like 0-6 are not acceptable for recreation soccer, because these lopsided games can hurtfully deflate young players. When you see lopsided games begin to take shape, whether you are winning or losing, please coordinate with the other team's coach to make adjustments as needed to ensure games remain balanced for every match.

Here are some example options to help balance every game:

  • Step 1 - Adjust Players: If the score is up by 3, move strong players into other positions and start adding restrictions (left foot only, only two goals per player, etc.)
  • Step 2 - Loan Players: If the score is up by 6, switch players to the other team in creative ways that will help reverse the course of the game.
  • Step 3 - Shuffle Teams: If the score is up by 9, it's time to restart. Shuffle your teams entirely. Then restart play with a new scrimmage that keeps the experience fun and competitive for all of the kids present.
  • Remember to keep referees in the loop with any agreements and additional rules that you choose to deal with lopsided games.

Coaches v Referees: Remember, as a coach, your role is to demonstrate to both players and parents how to respect all volunteers, including those who generously give their time to officiate. Please do your best to support your referees and respect all the difficult decisions they must make while serving as match officials.

If you have any questions or would appreciate any help, please feel welcome to reach out anytime by replying to this email or by contacting any of us on the Corvallis AYSO board.

We appreciate your dedication and look forward to a great Week 3!

 Game & Spectator Conduct
 9/15/24 4:16 PM

AYSO Coaches, Assistant Coaches & Team Managers:

As we progress through the 2024 Fall Season it is beneficial, for the sake of our young players, that everyone is on the same page. Please note the following game observations that have been made so far, and new changes that will be added for Week 3:

1. NEW: 3rd - 8th grade fields will have technical lines added to the fields. Referee will likely clarify these lines prior to starting the game. In addition AYSO will look to add a bold line along the Spectator Sideline to prevent spectator encroachment, and create room for players to perform throw-ins, or leave the field.

2. Spectators: Their only role is to cheer on their team, support their teams effort, and keep emotions in check. A true AYSO fan will even compliment the efforts of the opposing team's players and coaches. Any other conduct will not be tolerated.

3. Coach Conduct: Remember what is most important. Whether or not a game is going well, Positive Coaching and Good Sportsmanship is key to keeping positive player attitude and performance. Teams do not come with equal skill-levels, equal experience, or equal levels of coaching. In the same respect, no all referees have the same experience, or same philosophy regarding "play on", or other nuances of officiating. Since coaches are expected to maintain order on their sideline and referees are expected to maintain order on the field it is critical that boundaries (sidelines) are respected at all times. Player behavior will remain positive if the coaches behavior remains positive. Coaches need to spend time during their practices to observe play, and player actions. During close play, are arms down, or away from the body? Are hands and arms impeding the flight of the ball? Are players overly aggressive? Are players needing more help with technique: throw-ins, tackling, play in the penalty box?

4. Balanced Game: If both teams can field the standard number of players for a specific division, then always start a game at full strength. Only when a game is clearly unbalanced should coaches make the expected adjustments. The adjustments used will differ from game to game, so removing players isn't necessarily the first option a coach should make.
  • Consecutive passes before shooting (4x, 5x...)
  • Wait until opposing team reaches mid-field before attacking the ball
  • Move strong players to defense
5. Coach Field Session Trainings: Many of the challenges a coach will face are typically addressed during our field sessions. As AYSO evolves, and new approaches are tried for the benefit of our players, it isn't enough to simply take the online courses. During the winter break, Coach Instructors will get together to evaluate their sessions, and focus on opportunities to better serve our coaches, including possibly requiring all coaches to attend our field sessions in the spring.

Moving forward we hope your young players can experience a positive Week 3 and you can provide the positive guidance necessary to support your teams efforts regardless of the outcome.

Take care, and see you on Saturday.

 Adjusting to game imbalance: Options
 9/10/24 11:05 PM

Hey 6U Coaches,

According to Game Reports, several of Week 1's scores looked pretty uneven. It is important that all coaches work together to keep games balanced, and to make adjustments when there is any imbalance. The following adjustments are found in some AYSO resources, or were shared during our Fall field sessions:

6U: Imbalance (3v3)

1. 4v3 (Weaker Team: add a field player until scoring is more balanced)
2. Consecutive passes (3-5) before shooting on goal (Stronger Team: goal setting/ team-building)
3. Have goal-scorers play defense (Players are not predetermined to play a specific position - Player Development).
4. Add a PUGG goal to one end-line (Permanent goal remains in place) until scoring is balanced.

6U Scores: Imbalance

1. The score should be entered on the Game Report form, but during the game each score should be handled with grace and dignity.
2. Players at this level will take adversity personally. Coaches and parents must display compassion when a game is imbalanced. All players want to feel successful.
3. If players aren't having fun, we are missing the point of "play". Coaches must step in and share, with all players, how proud they are of their efforts.

The most important groups we need to support are 5U & 6U. These players are the foundation to AYSO's future. By working together we can create an atmosphere of fun, an atmosphere of learning, and an atmosphere of community.

Enjoy your Fall season.

Game Reports: Coach & Referee Opportunities
 9/10/24 12:12 PM

AYSO Coaches & Players,

The 2024 AYSO Fall season has officially begun. The first game provides coaches and players with an opportunity to learn about their opponent, learn about individual performance, and learn about how some games are officiated.

Game Report, overall, have been quite positive. Many coaches are expressing great effort, fair play, and sound officiating; feedback valuable to building a fun and fair soccer experience. To those coaches who shared a different experience, the following statement is meant to acknowledge your feedback, and begin a dialogue that can keep everyone on the same page:

  • Throw-ins: Any skill we are teaching should come with an opportunity to improve. Most throw-ins witnessed were not correct and not called. Players should have the opportunity for a second throw-in before giving possession to the other team. During practices, please make sure you are teaching the proper throw-in technique. The less the referee has to manage during a game the better. An email to our referees will be sent expressing this observation.
  • Offsides: Referees are going to be flexible at this level of soccer. The important point is educating players about offsides during practice, not the game. Demonstrate examples of offsides, discuss how to prevent offsides, but keep it simple. In addition, please understand that it has been a challenge to field enough referees for proper game coverage. Calls will be missed, calls will be let go, and several referees are new to the job.
In the end, we are here for the players. Adult volunteers, like yourselves, are selflessly providing guidance and support to players who simply want to play a sport they find interesting. Player emotion feeds off of our emotions. Player behavior feeds off of our behavior. Player passion feeds off our passion. And player success is a reflection of our leadership.

Have a great Fall season, and continue to share your experiences through the AYSO Game Report.

All the best,

Brad Whitcomb
AYSO Director of Coach Instruction
AYSO Safety Director
AYSO 5U Coach

 [CorvallisAYSO] 3rd/4th Game Schedules v2
 9/01/24 9:09 PM

Hi All 3rd/4th Families,

Your game schedules have been updated to version 2 for both Boys and Girls.

This is a complete rework, as we needed to adjust for head coaches covering multiple teams. We also had to disband a 3/4 boys team (we are working to place folks), eliminating the double header need.

TIP: you can subscribe to your Sports Connect calendar by logging in, going to the calendar area (here), and exporting it to Google/webcal.

 [CorvallisAYSO] Game Schedule v1 Notes
 8/28/24 10:36 PM

Hi K-6 Head Coaches and Team Managers,

The game schedule v1 is built, and I'm looking for any blaring errors. I worked to avoid complete overlaps of games, but many of you working on multiple teams will see some overlap at some point. With cramming everything into time between 8am - 1pm, my options are often limited. Please review your games and report back if you see issues. Changes are a challenge to ripple through all the pieces, so please get any issues to me ASAP so I can release any needed version 2's this weekend.

All games can be found here, you can look by team or by division, it is always helpful if you send a proposed change or game swap.

[CorvallisAYSO] Teams Time to Meet & Play!
 8/24/24 6:56 AM

Hello all allocated fall recreational soccer parents.

This is primarily for your team volunteers, but feel free to read it so you know what is coming.

Team Volunteers: Head Coach or Team Manager OR if you are the only team volunteer, you need to call the team meeting to discuss the season.

Plan a Team Meeting & Practice: To-Do List
  • Contact all families (use prior group email or Sports Connect's team email system on your team page (search here, or it is often a link by the player/volunteer name after you log in https://ayso149.org)).
  • Propose a day, time, & location to have all players come to play and parents to meet.
    • 8/26-9/2, you have good odds to show up at any park or school location and find some space to use, even at the Adams area. Set a precise meeting spot to start, then move to a play area for the practice/meeting.
    • Players will need shin guards at a minimum.
    • Team equipment pickup is Today 8/24 11am-1pm OR Mon 8/26 6-7pm OR Wed 8/28 5-6pm OR Sat 8/31 9-10am, ALL @ Adams School Sheds.
    • If you do not have the equipment yet, have players bring a ball to do some school yard soccer as you meet.
    • A parent of the player needs to stay the entire time.
  • Remind parents the day of the meeting.
  • Double check you emailed everyone by looking at the Sports Connect roster in the team page.
During the Team Meeting & Practice: Check List
  • Send players to start playing, break the ice to start. Try the basics of passing with a buddy OR set up a some goals and let them start playing OR another P.E. type activity (freeze tag, kick a ball between legs to unfreeze).
  • If possible, I would task another volunteer with managing the players' activity while you meet.
  • Talk to the parents and discuss...
    • Needed Volunteers?
      • Head Coach: Need someone designated as the head, but co-coaches or split job coaches are common (cannot make Saturdays, but can run practices?).
      • Asst. Coach: Each practice needs to have two adult volunteers just in case. All coaches need to take the same trainings, but not all coaches do the same tasks/jobs, you can have an assistant for practices and another for games, as many assistant coaches as you need.
      • Youth Coach Helper: Not needed... but could cover a soccer skills need. Yes, 12+ can help at practices and games, but they need to be registered and take the trainings... remember you still need two adults at each practice.
      • Team Manager: Not required, we assume the head coach if no person is designated. BUT they can be incredibly helpful in reading the emails, talking with parents, and helping the team function.
      • Centering Referee: 3rd-8th need to have someone trained to referee your games. The scheduling is done by signing up, but without each team having this person that is up for the challenging task, coaches can sometimes be stuck with the burden of doing multiple jobs in the game day that has now become a scrimmage day. We offer training and support, you can ref your own team/player, and parents should not just look within the team for someone to help... aunts, uncles, grandparents, that sports friend, etc.
      • Additional Referee: 5th-8th, we look to have 3 referees at each of the higher games, youth 12+ can fill this role and volunteers can sign up for what games they want to do. Similar to the centering referee, look outside the box and ask the parents to help recruit.
    • Practice Times & Location (learn more https://corvallisayso.org/coaches/practices)
      • Parks are first come, first served.
      • Elementary Schools should be reserved, but many can work with a first come, first served as you will likely work with other groups to find space (except Adams, you need to reserve to use Adams).
      • REMINDER: an adult that is the gender of the players is needed at each practice. Other teams practicing at the same time in the same area could fill this, but if you are off on your own... you need to schedule someone.
    • Parent/Player Expectations
      • Expectations of timeliness.
      • What players need to bring to what.
      • NOTICE: we have moved to a two color system where each player gets two jerseys, parents should always bring both (games will be home team = red, away team = blue).
      • What players should not bring.
      • CONFIRM EMERGENCY CONTACT DETAILS - Team volunteers, you will get an email on Sunday night with this data.
  • Get your action item list assembled for after the meeting.
    • To get team uniforms, the required volunteers need to be registered. (we check this at the coach equipment pickup events)
    • To get to have a team name, the required volunteers need to be registered.
    • FILL OUT THE TEAM WORKSHEET (Manager or Head Coach)
    • Send notes to the entire team and tell parents about any team need or followup items.
  • What happens if you do not get the needed volunteers?
    • We do all we can to help, please fill out the team worksheet and note what you are missing and need help with. The sheet goes to your division coordinator and team formation so they can allocate volunteers, set the team name, and help look for potential volunteers.
    • Your first game could be without uniforms :(. AYSO Benton County is entirely volunteer run, we are motivated by the desire to provide world-class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives.
    • Worst case & rare... a team missing a head coach can cause the team to be disbanded, and we will try to distribute players as we are able.
    • A team missing referees are assessed in each division to see if the total pool of volunteers can cover the need.

This is the first year of this small team meeting approach, I appreciate your patience as we work out the bugs.

VOLUNTEERS if you have questions, the best place is at a training or a coach equipment pickup event. I'm working through emails, but I'm prioritizing against other tasks (like this) and working on the game schedule.

Thank You,
Luke Cotton

 [CorvallisAYSO] Fall Volunteers & Training
 8/18/24 9:15 AM

Hello All AYSO Rec Families... aka Potential AYSO Volunteers!

Your team could likely use your help...

HEAD COACH (One Required) (Age 18+) - This is an individual willing to take the responsibility for organizing a team, arranging team training sessions, coaching during games, and assuring that AYSO philosophies are followed during training & games. Position/Job Manager (Coach Admin.)

ASSISTANT COACH (One Required) (Age 18+) - Individuals willing to take responsibility for assisting the coach during training sessions and games and provide leadership in carrying out AYSO and team philosophies. Position/Job Manager (Coach Admin.)
(Note training requirements are the same as the head coach, since you could be asked to help fill in when the head coach is gone)

REFEREE (3/4th Grade One Required, 5/6th & 7/8th Grade Two Required) (Age 12+) (No refs for Kinder - 2nd Grade) - You sign up for an assignment w/ a division that fits your experience and training. Your commitment involves 1 game per week in the fall and spring, or an equivalent number of games per season for each child you are representing (you can ref your child's game). Trading game assignments and getting substitutes are okay, but we still need referees to fulfill their game count commitment. Position/Job Manager (Referee Admin.)

TEAM PARENT / MANAGER (Optional) - This person is given access to Sports Connect's communication tools. They also help with coordinating parents/volunteers and the logistics for team activities while carrying out AYSO and team philosophies. If no team manager is on the team, it is assumed the head coach is acting as the team manager.

How do you get started????
  • Your team should be getting an email today with what volunteers are still needed. Take a look at that, or look at your team dashboard (here) to see where you can fill in.

[CorvallisAYSO] Fall Rec Soccer Team Posting
 8/11/24 5:27 PM

Hello All Fall Outdoor Recreational Players,

Most outdoor rec team rosters have been posted in Sports Connect, login at https://ayso149.org and click on the team link (like "## Name TBD") next to your player's registration.
(except a few in 2nd grade boys that we are re-working)

What do you need to do with this roster? Please look it over and contact your division coordinator (here) if you notice an issue with the team. Volunteers are still working through registration/placement, so you might not see the coach on the roster yet... or the team needs a coach (more will be sent if that is the case).
Not Playing?... Please use this form (here) to drop from playing.

Here are some items to know for this season...

  • Team Changes: Some limited team changes are likely over this week as we continue to get new player registrations and work through any volunteer requests/issues.
  • Volunteers: All teams need a head coach and assistant coach to function as a team. In 3rd/4th, 5th/6th, & 7th/8th we require two referees for each team. If you see your team is missing volunteers, they likely need your help, and you can register using this guide (here).
  • Calendar: the season calendar is still being updated (here), but this year we are not doing one big meeting. We are asking/helping teams to do individual team meetings in late August. The game schedule is being worked on now, but needs to wait for more of the Head Coaches to get signed up (to try and schedule around conflicts). Your first game will be on Saturday, 9/7, likely in the morning or early afternoon.
  • Division Bundle: this week you will be getting some targeted emails about anything the team is missing and a program bundle with all the details about the division.
  • Uniforms: like in the past, teams will need to fill all needed volunteer spots to choose a team name and to get player uniforms. One change this year is we are moving to an all players get two jersey colors model, home team brings one color, away team brings the other. More details will be sent about uniforms and equipment.

More information to come, and thank you for your understanding as our volunteers work to get ready for this fall soccer season.

Thank You,
Luke Cotton
